Walter Staats Video: Rural Mail Carriers/New Sharon Cemetery

I have finally gotten around to uploading one of my grandfather’s videos. For any of you who knew him, you know that there was a several year period where you were unlikely to escape Grandpa Staats and his video camera. A number of these tapes survived, although many were taped over, and others deteriorated to the point they were unusable. I transferred many of them years ago. Some of the transfers are missing, so I may have to actually go out and buy a VCR to try and re-record some of them to DVD.

This video was taken towards the end of May, 1985 in Summerfield and Sharon, OH. In the Summerfield section, Walter talks about his father, Wilbur Staats, and the experience of the rural mail carrier in the early 1900s. The second half is taken at the New Sharon Cemetery in Sharon, OH, where many of my Grandma Staats’ relatives are buried.

I have to say, it had been awhile since I had watched any of these, and it was really great to hear my grandfather’s voice again. Since my father died when I was young, I spent quite a bit of time with my grandparents, and I really miss them. I can only imagine what information Grandpa would find to look up if he had made it to see these internet, information-driven days.

Hopefully I will get a chance to edit some of the other videos and get them online. I know my aunt, and all the Danford cousins will enjoy seeing some of them.

Chris….Are you from Albany or Gowanus Staats family? I recently took a DNA test to see if there is any connection between the two families….there is no connection. I am from Albany family….took the test at the urging of Sean Staats who is from Gowanus family.

I am writing to you because my family lived in Cleveland for many years, wondering which family you are a descendant of????

I am not a regular twitter user, so if you are into genealogy plealse send me an email….thanks!
